WHITBY & CO. THEN, NOW AND IN THE FUTURE
SUSTAINABILITY
In 1995, when leading optometrist Gillian Whitby set up Whitby & Co., her aim was to provide clinical excellence, specialist eye care using the latest technology, and the kind of traditional personal service that was disappearing fast even then. Thirty years on, that care and diligence has earned Whitby & Co. a prestigious reputation.
A Greener future
Sustainability is ever more important to us.
- Our primary lens supplier prides itself on eco-friendly manufacturing processes.
- We recycle used contact lenses.
- We supply reusable cotton drawstring bags.
- We stock eco-friendly glasses frames brands.
- We use free refillable bottles for glasses-cleaning fluid.
- We prefer digital to printed copy.
- We use QR codes instead of business cards.
And, we are always looking to improve.
New Initiative
At Whitby & Co. Opticians, we’re proud to launch a new sustainability initiative: a recycling scheme for demo lenses. One of the most frequent questions we’ve received is whether these acrylic lenses—used in frames for display purposes—can be recycled. Until now, the answer has always been “no.”
Through an exciting partnership with Eyespace, we can now ensure that these lenses are reused or recycled, rather than sent to landfill where they could take hundreds of years to break down. This initiative tackles one of the largest sources of waste in our industry, and we’re committed to doing our part to make optometry more sustainable.
Participating is easy. We collect all our demo lenses and send them directly to Eyespace’s head office, where they’ll be processed for recycling. This small chanege makes a big difference, and we’re excited to help lead the way in reducing environmental impact within the optical industry. At Whitby & Co., sustainability starts with us!
