Clear vision isn’t just about seeing comfortably.  It has an impact on how we feel and how well we work.  A recent report highlighted that poor eyesight at work could be costing the UK economy up to £21.4 billion every year due to reduced productivity, slower reading times and avoidable mistakes (Specsavers, 2025).

At Whitby & Co., this doesn’t surprise us. Many patients tell us they struggle with tired eyes, blurred vision or difficulty focusing during long days at the computer. These symptoms appear gradually, so people often adapt without realising how much strain their eyes are under.

Most workplaces now revolve around screens laptops, monitors, tablets and phones.  As a result, close up focus demands more from the eyes and even mild vision changes can make everyday tasks harder.  Common symptoms often include:

  • Blurred or fluctuating vision
  • Difficulty reading fine print or small text
  • Light sensitivity or glare discomfort
  • Headaches or neck strain from leaning forward

For many adults, especially those over 40, these issues are often linked to presbyopia (the natural age related change that affects near vision). But digital eye strain can affect anyone, regardless of age. Left unaddressed, these symptoms don’t just cause discomfort, they tend to slow people down.

An eye examination does far more than check your prescription.  It can help identify:

  • Whether you need glasses specifically for computer use
  • If digital eye strain is contributing to tired eyes or headaches
  • Whether glare, screen brightness or your working distance is affecting clarity
  • Early signs of other health conditions (such as hypertension or diabetes) that can show up in the eyes

For many people, updating an outdated prescription or choosing the right lens design can make a huge difference.

  • Occupational lenses (also known as “office” lenses) are specifically designed for screen based work and provide:
  • A wider clear field of vision at screen and desk distance
  • Smooth focus transitions
  • Reduced eye strain during long periods of near work
  • A more natural posture, supporting neck and back comfort

Anti-reflective coatings and blue-control options can also minimise glare and improve comfort under office lighting.

Many of the symptoms highlighted in recent research (slower reading, visual fatigue, difficulty concentrating) are completely avoidable with the right eye care. Regular eye examinations are one of the most cost-effective ways to protect visual comfort, workplace performance and overall wellbeing.
