Could your eyesight put your driving licence at risk?

Most of us think about renewing our driving licence, renewing our insurance and servicing our car.

But when was the last time you checked whether your eyesight still meets the legal standard for driving?

Recent research has highlighted a concerning gap in drivers’ awareness of the eyesight requirements needed to drive safely and legally in the UK.

A survey of 2,000 motorists found that only around half believed they could read a vehicle number plate from 20 metres away (the minimum legal eyesight requirement for driving). Many were also unaware that failing to meet this standard could result in fines, penalty points or even the loss of their driving licence.

Perhaps even more concerning, some drivers who require glasses or contact lenses for driving admitted to getting behind the wheel without them.

Vision changes can happen gradually. Many people adapt without realising their eyesight has deteriorated, particularly if they spend most of their day driving familiar routes.

Regular eye examinations do more than just determine whether you need glasses.

They help ensure your vision meets the standard required for driving and can also identify eye conditions before symptoms become noticeable.

Conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and age-related macular degeneration often develop slowly and may not affect day-to-day vision until they are more advanced.

Early detection can make a significant difference to treatment outcomes and long-term eye health.
If you drive regularly, ask yourself:

– Could I comfortably read a number plate from 20 metres away?
– Do I always wear my prescribed glasses or contact lenses when driving?
– When was my last eye examination?

If you’re unsure of the answer to any of these questions, it may be time to have your eyes checked.

Good vision plays a vital role in road safety, helping drivers identify hazards, judge distances and react quickly to changing conditions.

Booking regular eye examinations and wearing the correct prescription when driving are simple steps that help protect not only your own safety, but that of your passengers and other road users too.

If it has been a while since your last eye test, now could be the perfect time to book an appointment.
